Camping with Pack 1
Is this your first time camping, or are you a seasoned veteran? Regardless, a few things to know about Pack 1 Campouts. All our campouts are family style car camping. You won’t have to go far from the car to get to the site. As with any Cub Scout activity, one parent should attend with their scout.
We camp at a variety of locations - usually Scout Camps. They usually feature bathrooms, and running water. Favorite spots include Camp Nobscot in Sudbury, Treasure Valley in Rutland, Wanocksett in Dublin NH, and Collier in Gardner.

So what do we do at our Campouts? We sit around the fire, sing songs, tell jokes and stories, and even perform skits. We will often take hikes. And we will fish!

Fishing is also an important part of our campouts. Most locations we go do have access to a lake or pond for fishing. If your family doesn't have equipment (or know-how), don't worry. We have a dozen pack fishing poles.
How cold does it get? Cub Scouts typically don't camp in below freezing temperatures. You can generally expect 50 degrees or warmer - though occasionally it has crept down to the 40s.

What do you need?
-
A tent. If you don’t have one, you can buy an inexpensive one from Coleman (Sundome). Personally, I like the ALPS Meramac tent which is about $100 for a 2 person tent. Of course if you are not sure yet if camping is for your family, we can loan you a tent. https://amzn.to/2QbDUKE
-
A sleeping pad. A therm-a-rest sleeping pad is about $25, but you can always get by with a Yoga Mat or puzzle mats for the first time, again, until you decide that ‘hey, this camping thing is awesome’. https://amzn.to/2Qbwd76
-
A sleeping bag. Or Blankets can work too, but a sleeping bag is super handy to have anyways, for those sleepovers at friends houses. I strongly recommend buying an adult size sleeping bag for your scout. Why? Sleeping bags last a long time. You will get many more years of use out of this sleeping bag if you get adult size. Your scout will thank you for it.
-
Important note on Sleeping Bags - whatever the bag is Temperature Rated, assume it is about 10 degrees higher - Temperature Rating is based on survivability, not comfort. So a 0 degree rated sleeping bag is best for about 10-15 degrees.

-
A Mess Kit. Pack 1 does not bring any paper goods to campouts. https://amzn.to/2WidoVn
-
A trash bag. Pack 1 events are carry in, carry out. In order to minimize our impact on the environment, we will not provide extra trash bags at our campouts. Please plan on leaving with everything you bring.
-
A reusable water bottle. This is good for many events, hikes, campouts, even your other sporting events. We will generally have water available in 7 gallon jugs. We encourage use of reusable bottles rather than single use plastic bottles.
