Thursday, October 15, 2020 - Saturday, October 17, 2020

  1. Registration

Cub Scouts and Siblings will need to register their cars with the Derby Coordinator and the details will be emailed to you.

    4:00pm – 5:00pm on Thursday, October 15,
    4:00pm – 5:00pm Friday, October 16, or
    4:00pm – 5:00pm Saturday October 17.

Pick out a name for your car that it will be registered under.  Take a picture of your car and send it to the Derby Coordinator by email. We will post the pictures on the website for voting via email.

Email the Derby Coordinator if you need another time slot to register.  Registration will be outside.  Some weights, tools, dry lubrication, will be provided to make modifications to your car if it does not pass inspection the first time.  To minimize traffic, we suggest that any significant repair should be made at home and re-inspected in a later time slot.

  2. Inspection

    a) Cars will be inspected by the Race Committee for compliance to the rules.
    b) The weight displayed on the scale used by the inspector is official and final.
    c) If a car fails inspection, the inspector will explain the deficiency and the Scout will be given the opportunity to make the car compliant before the scheduled close of registration.

  3. Qualified Cars

Once the car has passed inspection, a number will be assigned and placed on the car.  This is the official number; all other numbers are decorative only.  The inspection team will place the car on the impound table.  Once on the impound table, no car may be altered in anyway and only the Car Handlers (as designated by the Race Committee) will handle the car

Rules

  1. Only members of the Race Committee may enter the track area

  2. The races will be conducted on a track that uses an electronic timer. Each car will be raced four times (one time on each lane of the track) with the three best times to determine their average time.  The race software is designed to race the cars at random.

  3. Car Leaves Lane

    a) If, during a race heat, a car leaves its lane but proceeds down the track in a manner that does not interfere with its opponent, the car will be re-staged and re-run by itself in the same lane.

    b) If the car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the entire heat will be re-staged and re-run.

    c) If the same car leaves its lane again, it shall be considered to have ended its race at that point and given a max time of 9.99 seconds.  If the same car interferes with another car, the heat will be re-staged and re-run without that car.

  4. Car Leaves Track

    a) If, during a race heat, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponents, the Scout may be given a reasonable amount of time to inspect and/or repair the car, and re-qualify.  The car will be re-staged and re-run by itself.

    b) If, during a race heat, a car leaves the track and interferes with another car, the Scouts may be given a reasonable amount of time to inspect and/or repair the cars, re-qualify and the heat will be re-staged and re-run.

    c) If the same car leaves the track again, it shall be considered to have ended its race at that point and given a max time of 9.99 seconds. If the same car interferes with another car, the heat will be re-staged and re-run without that car

  5. Car Repair (Since this is virtual this year, we propose allowing the Pinewood Derby Committee to fix a car if there is a simple fix in all cases including those above.)

    a) In the event of a car losing a wheel during the race, the Scout and his adult partner may be granted a reasonable amount of time to perform repairs.  Only the damaged portion of the car may be modified.  Race officials shall re-inspect any car that is serviced during the race. The car will be re-staged and re-run..

    b) Under no circumstances will any lubrication be applied to any axles or wheels once the car is impounded,   the only lubricating allowed once the car is registered will be on a new wheel or axle that had to be replaced.

  6. Not Finishing

    a) If, during a race heat, a car does not reach the finish line, the Scout may be given a reasonable amount of time to inspect and/or repair the car, re-qualify.  The car will be re-staged and re-run by itself.

    b) If the same car again does not reach the finish line, it shall be considered to have ended its race at that point and given a max time of 9.99 seconds.

  7. No Finishers

If, during a race heat, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the heat shall be restaged and re-run. If during the second race, no car reaches the finish line, each car will be given a max time 9.99 seconds.

  8. Track Fault

If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the Race Chairman may inspect the track and, if a track fault is found which probably caused the initial violation, the Race Chairman may order the race heat to be re-run after the track is repaired.

  9. Disputes

Any disputes will be handled by Race Committee who has the final decision.
